Lack of access to services for people with disabilities in Ireland

Feb 15: Anew report by the Department of Health has criticised the HSE for the difficulty people with disabilities have in accessing health services.

The report, which reviews progress in relation to the Department’s sectoral plan for disability services in 2009, states that progress on improving accessibility of health services for people with disabilities has been slower than anticipated.

The report attributes the slow progress to the delay in appointing a national specialist in accessibility, whose role will include all accessibility issues across the HSE.

In response, the HSE said that it has recently appointed Ms Caoimhe Gleeson to the role.

Ms Gleeson’s responsibilities will include developing guidelines to ensure the accessibility of mainstream health services for people with disabilities, ensuring access officers are in place and disability awareness training programmes are developed and available for employees as necessary.
