Hearing–impaired teacher inspires both students and teachers alike: Philippines
42–year–old Renato Mariano is serving as an inspiration to both students and teachers of San Lorenzo Ruiz Institute at Bakakeng, Baguio City.
Despite his hearing disability, he continued to fight for his dream of helping other hearing–impaired children.
Popularly known as "Bobby," he continues to teach 49 hearing–impaired students. He started to teach since 1991.
He wanted to teach them how to connect words with signs and symbols. He said he also wants to share his artistic gifts.
He "walks his talk" of inspiring others by making handicrafts that are also beautiful enough to be exhibited and exposed to competitions. This is what he does apart from teaching.
"Hearing–impaired students should not look down on themselves with pity," said Bobby. "See what I can do. They should be eager and patient to learn and become better peoplecbetter deaf students."
"He is not only a teacher, but he is also a father–figure to the students because he is always there for them," said principal Denise Pauline Osmena. "If hearing–impaired children are given the same schooling like that experienced by other kids, then they can work together with the hearing–equipped children."
Bobby has relatives who are abroad, but he chose to stay in the Philippines so that his talents and abilities could be used to benefit children who are also like him. He thought of others more than he valued himself.
"Whatever they have, they must use these to continue to be brave and strive harder," said Bobby. This proves that disability will never be a hindrance to a heart that seeks to contribute to the betterment of other people's lives.
