South Korea increases disabled employment quota

South Korea's Labour Ministry has announced that it will be raise the mandatory employment quota for disabled workers next year.

This could translate into hundreds of new jobs for this group, Arirang News reports.

At the moment, two per cent of a company's workforce must fall into this category, which will be increased to three per cent in 2009.

Labour minister Lee Young–hee told the news provider that employment is a better option than public welfare for disabled people who are capable of working. To better equip them for this, the government is also negotiating with educational institutions to arrange for more disabled students to enroll.

Despite the current quotas, only 1.6 per cent of government workers are registered disabled people.

In other employment news from South Korea, the country's National Statistical Office recently found that its graduate employment is one of the lowest in the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development.
