June 19: Apple announced FaceTime, a new application for the newly announced iPhone 4 that will let iPhone 4 users call with one another using video call.
The FaceTime application supports video calling and has some features we haven’t seen before. It’s possible to choose to stream video from either of the two cameras (front-facing or rear-facing), and you can do a few other things like change the orientation of the video from landscape to portrait.
At present, FaceTime only works over WiFi- no 3G support yet, however Steve Jobs confirms that Apple fully intends to get the software working on 3G.
In spite of network limitations, FaceTime over Wi-Fi is quite remarkable and can switch seamlessly with a single click between the front and back cameras to change the camera perspective during a call. Apple designed the front-facing camera especially for video calls, which means it was built to focus on your face when you hold it at arm’s length. FaceTime also works in both landscape and portrait modes.
However, Apple did point out some of its compelling uses, such as allowing two deaf people to communicate in sign language.
The Apple iPhone 4 will be launched on June 24.
