KOTA KINABALU, June 17: Shell Malaysia Thursday announced that they will introduce a new scholarship programme for disabled students this year, to mark the anniversary of its upstream operations and complement its existing scholarship and bursary programme.
It will be launched in Sarawak for 2010, and the programme will be extended nationwide later in 2011, said its Director of Human Resources Leslie Hayward.
"This will help students who are faced with not only limited fund for education, but also facing additional challenges due to their disabilities," he said during the Shell Educational Excellence Awards presentation here.
Further details on the scholarship will be made public on Aug 10, where the date coincides with the drilling of the first oil well in Sarawak in 1910, he added.
Meanwhile during the function, for the Shell Scholarship Fund (SSF) programme this year Shell Malaysia has selected 10 students from Sabah to further their studies at local universities while another four students will pursue their studies overseas.
In addition some 170 students were selected this year to receive bursaries for excellent results in their Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.
Hayward said Shell Malaysia was investing RM14.5 million nationwide this year for various educational assistance or capacity building programmes, an increase of RM2 million from the previous year.
He said out of the total, RM2.8 million is allocated for Sabah.
