Reinstate visually impaired typist, Bombay High Court tells college | Print |

MUMBAI, INDIA, Oct 11: A Blind college administrative employee, who was dismissed from service, has been reinstated by the Bombay High Court. In an order on Monday, the court directed that the employer, Chetna College in Bandra, take back Nilima Surve in the same position.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Roshan Dalvi said, “We direct that upon the petitioner (Nilima) submitting a representation to the state government, the government shall provide special gadgets and software to her.” The judges directed Chetan Agarwal, the counsel for the petitioner, to inform the court which software the employee needs to perform her duties within two weeks.

An elated Nilima told Newsline, “I am extremely happy with the verdict. However, my victory will be complete when I resume work.”

In November 2006, Nilima had been appointed by Chetna College as a junior clerk-cum-typist. However, she was terminated from service in March 2007.
According to the college, she had been removed on account of “mistakes in typing.” Nilima argued she had asked for a particular software that would help her perform her work, but the demand was rejected by the college authorities.
