Ongoing internet dialogue addresses transportation needs for disabled people | Print |
An open dialogue is going on right now based on this question:"What ideas and actions can increase access to affordable and reliable transportation services for people with disabilities, older adults, and people with limited incomes?"
If you have an answer, the federal government wants to hear from you. In 2004, the Federal Interagency Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility (CCAM) launched a program called United We Ride (UWR) to identify and remove barriers impeding local coordination of federal transportation funding. CCAM membership includes 11 federal departments: the Secretaries of Transportation, Health and Human Services, Labor, Education, Interior, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture, and Veteran Affairs, the commissioner of the Social Security Administration, the Attorney General, and the Chairperson of the National Council on Disability.

On Monday, CCAM began assessing the results of its UWR program by asking stakeholders nationwide to provide feedback on improving accessibility to affordable and reliable transportation for disabled people , the elderly and those with limited incomes. Participants can share ideas as well as their experiences with transportation opportunities or challenges in their community. The dialogue site includes a five–star rating system for ideas and a comment option allowing participants to explain a rating or add to another participant's idea submission.

This open discussion runs through Friday, November 13. Results will be passed on to CCAM members to assist in decision–making related to the CCAM Strategic Plan and the UWR Action Plan. The three main goals of the 2007–2010 UWR Action Plan have been to:
1. Provide more rides for target populations for the same or fewer assets;
2. Simplify access; and
3. Increase customer satisfaction.

Dialogue results will be posted on the UWR website and will also be e–mailed to participants who sign up and provide an e–mail address.
